Home Remedies to Ease Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis is a condition that causes swelling and sores in the colon and rectum. It is painful, sometimes embarrassing and can be deadly if left untreated. Your doctor is needed both in the diagnosis and the treatment, however there are things that you can do.

Herbs that help reduce inflammation may be very useful, although care has to be taken if you are also taking anti-inflammatory medications. One of the herbs recommended is aloe. This herb is likely to make you feel worse. It is a potent laxative. The cramping from taking aloe could exacerbate that from the colitis. Yarrow would be a much better source.

Several herbs can coat the lining of your stomach and intestines. Slippery elm, marshmallow and licorice are all known for that property. Be careful of using licorice if you have high blood pressure, it is quite good at causing it to go up. Also, don't take medications at the same time as these herbs. They might not be effective that way.

Larch can increase the good bacteria in your intestines, which could be helpful. However, it also affects the immune system. If you have an auto-immune disorder, this herb should be avoided. Transplant patients should also avoid it.

Chamomile is a soothing herb, both for the nerves and for the digestive tract. It is fairly mild and can be tolerated by most people well. If you are allergic to ragweed, however, chamomile could cause a reaction as they are related.

Peppermint can also help, though in this instance an enteric coated tablet might be ideal. That way, it gets through your stomach before it starts working. Otherwise, the benefits may be greatly reduced by digestion.

As with all medical conditions, it is important that you speak to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any new supplement. They know your medical history and the prescriptions you take.
